Shaboutique – Beginnings To Wow!
Some months ago the idea of Shaboutique was formed. From Magpie Coop the concept of a new shop of upcycled, recycled and remade items – a remakery peopled by several artists who transform different items in many innovative ways, was born. Ths shop is located in Brighton’s Open Market
Once the keys were obtained, the shop transformed from an unpromising open space to a funky, delightful cave of treasure in a matter of a couple of weeks. Resourceful artists and makers constructed shelving, screens and transformed old furniture to make the most amazing shop in town! Peope walk in and are quite bowled over by the stunning pieces available.
The shop is true to its philosophy of never using anything new when something old or discarded can be utilised instead. In much the same way that many of the items that are sold have been morphed from unattractive, discarded waste into fabulous objects of desire, so the shop fittings themselves are a testament to inspiration and creativity.
Many Items, Many Artists
The shop houses the work of various artists who work with discarded items turning them into beautiful objects of desire. Each artist has their own unique focus.
- Bel reupholsters furniture and makes clothes and cushions from offcuts
- Anne takes pieces of furniture or household items and gives then a new lease of life with decoupage
- Athene makes attractive pieces from driftwood
- George reconfigures furniture and other objects
- Fiona makes jewellery and hats from textiles
- Nicole uses bicycle inner tubes and banners to make a range from jewellery to mats and bags
Brighton Open Market
The Brighton Open Market had its official opening on July 19th 2014 and the place buzzed with people wanting to visit the new shops. Shaboutique immediately acquired many admirers – people loved the innovative and imaginative way items had been re-used – both for the items themselves and the shop fittings.
Many were delighted by the décor around the door and the wall hangings, both made from old pallets. Some loved the idea of making shelving from old videos and were inspired to go home and make some themselves (how many videos do you have in your loft?). Shaboutique is always delighted to provide inspiration for others to remake from old items.
But most of all people loved the way new things had been constructed from people’s throw aways and offcuts.
Ever Changing Stock
With jewellery from textiles and bicycle inner tubes and furniture transformed from textile offcuts this is a shop that shows that nothing should ever be wasted!
Come and find uniquely designed jackets and trousers, clocks, tables, plates as well as jewellery and unique items of furniture. Each article is an individual, never to be repeated object. In this days of everything looking alike wouldn’t you want to own something unique at a fraction of the cost of a new designer item? And you have the feel good factor of knowing you are putting something to usethat may well have otherwise ended up in landfill.
The stock in the shop will be different every time you come in as items are sold and new ones arrive. So if you like something, don’t wait around – once it is gone you may never see anything like it again!
But most of all come and visit for the sheer joy, inspiration and creativity of the shop and its content. And you will always be met with a friendly smile by people who will be more than willing to share some making secrets and ideas or chew over some aspect of Brighton life.
